A Traditional Irish Brown Soda BreadΒ is a dense, moist and very hearty bread which makes it particularlyΒ satisfying to eat on cold, wintery days with a hot bowl of homemade soup.

Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread

Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread

I’ve been meaning to make a Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread for quite a while now and had I known quite how simple it was, I would have definitely made it a lot sooner!

This recipe is one used by Mrs Murphy (the lovely Irish mother of a good friend of mine) so I trust it implicitly. Β All I have is a photocopy of a page from an old recipe card which says “Odlums Recipes” at the top. Β The only alterations I made from the givenΒ recipe was replacing the margarine for butter (however next time I may omit the butter altogether), I used wholemeal spelt flour instead of plain wholemeal flour and IΒ sprinkled a handful of mixed seeds &Β oats over the top.

Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread with Spiced Roast Pepper & Tomato Soup

Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread

This Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread goes superbly with myΒ Spicy Roast Red Pepper and Tomato SoupΒ recipe that I posted last week. Β Not only does it taste amazing it’s pretty healthy and super quick to make too. WithΒ just five basic ingredients: flour, buttermilk, butter, baking soda and salt.Β I used half wholemealΒ spelt flour and half plain white flour. It takesΒ 5 minutes to organise and weigh out the ingredients and another 5 minutes to mix. Β Then, all you need is to bake it for 40-45 minutes, which means you can have delicious fresh bread on the table in less than an hour.

Give thisΒ Traditional Irish Brown Soda Bread Β a go when you need bread in a hurry or are just craving a bit of Irish rustic.

Best served straight from the oven with plenty of salted Irish butter.

I want to bake a bread too. I have a check list of things I want to do this year and baking a bread from scratch is one of them.

I haven’t had good Irish Bread since I ate at the Irish restaurant in Downtown Disney and I’ve been craving it since then. I’ve never had any homemade, but this may force my hand!

Hi Letti, I would love to know how you get on. I froze some of mine because didn’t get to eat it all in one go – and it’s lovely toasted too. gx

I used to buy Irish Soda bread by a well known brand but it was loaded with calories, I shall definitely be trying this one out as its so much healthier. Thanks for this.

When you find out how easy it hardly seems worth the effort going to the grocery store to buy it – and you know 100% what’s in it too. πŸ™‚

I quite agree Amy. I’ve still so many of them to write to and share, it’s hard to know where to start sometimes. Glad you like the addition of seeds & oats, I thought it gave it even more rustic charm. Have a good weekend. gx

Yes it’s super quick, to put together, cooking is a bit longer but nothing like making bread and having to wait for the dough to rise.
